What’s so good about is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is like a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F.

Not only does it offer UV protection (it is SPF ~6) it provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production.
Shea butter is becoming a trendy ingredient featured in many beauty products on the market but has been used in Africa and other countries for years to improve skin and hair.

Shea Butter Benefits
The natural vitamins and fatty acids in Shea butter make it incredibly nourishing and moisturizing for skin so it is often used to remedy dry skin and protect the skin’s natural oils.

Shea Butter Uses
Shea butter is a super versatile natural beauty ingredient which had a number of uses. Below are a few:
Moisturizer face and body
Helps ward off stretch marks
Under-eye wrinkle remover and bag-reducer
Massage butter
Try whipping it to make your own body butter
As an SPF 6 skin lotion
Use to moisturize your scalp
Melt down and mix with your fave conditioner to give your hair an extra shot of moisture
As a natural cuticle cream
To help fade scars
On sore/raw noses during a cold or flu

What Kind of Shea Butter is best?
I purchased my Shea butter during Afro Hair and Beauty live and was told that it was told was (I will try to find the name of the vendor) unfortunately mine doesn’t have the nicest smell so I tend to use it on my skin at night then wash it off in the shower in the morning and use another moisturizer for the day
I have been told that you can purchase refined Shea butters that are odor free and bleached to be completely white, but I would guess that the refining process would remove some of the beneficial properties.

Handy tip
Warm the Shea butter until it melts and mix with honey (Make sure it is not warm not hot to the touch) add to wet hair after shampooing cover with a shower cap then wrap with a towel to keep in the heat. Leave on for about 15 mins then rinse off.

Your hair will feel super moisturized and smell amazing!

How To Take Down Braids and Twists Without Experiencing Breakage

As A Lupus suffer, full time worker and a person who likes to hit the snooze button more than once in the mornings have chosen to opt for long term protective styles which are kept in place for several weeks. While they are for promoting hair growth retention keeping a style for that long, there is no pros without cons.  Whether you have cornrows, braids, weaves or any of the other fashionable protective styles, eventually you are going to have to take them out and detangle cleans and condition your locks.

I have on many occasions been up until dumb o’clock raking out my protective style and being so tired that I am tempted to rake a come through my hair so I can go to sleep.

NO!!

Never do this the correct planning, patience and having effect products (Hey three p’s)  help you avoid having a difficult time taking down the style and ending up with hair on the floor rather than on your head.

Here are some tips on how to minimise breakage from long term protective styles and keep the hair that you worked hard to retain.

Know your hairstyle limits: Do not keep the style for too long

When selecting your next protective style ask yourself these questions about your hair:

Is it is kinky or curly or both?

Do individual strands tend to mesh or not?

Are your strands are fine or average or thick?

Does your hair shrinks when washed or not?

The answers to this question swill help to determine how long you should keep your protective style for most textures this is about 2-4 weeks for twists or cornrows

It is important not to keep the style for overly long especially if you are regularly wetting the hair.

Braids can be stretched up to 8 weeks depending on your hair texture, and the thickness of your braid (thinner braids usually last longer than thicker ones), the way you maintain the braids will also make the world of difference. It is important to keep the braids and the scalp clean and redo the braids around the hairline every 2-3 weeks is usually advised.

Condition your hair before the take down
A lot of braid wearers wait until after they have removed their protective style before giving hair a proper wash and condition. My tip is to do this day before adding 10-15 minutes to your normal conditioning time and of If you like to deep condition with heat, then do so event better. Conditioning prior to taking down allows the hair conditioner to soften hair and add moisture to it making the hair flexible but strong as it is moisturised but not wet. Deposits on hair surface will also be left over from the conditioner which soften the strands allowing them to bend easily so you hair will be in an ideal state to resist breakage from the comb stabbing at the braids or any stretching and pulling. Once your style has been removed and your hair detangled you can wash and condition your hair again.

Unravel rather than comb
You can use a rat tail comb to undo your protective style but it is kinder and gentler to unravel your hair with your fingers (murder on you manicure I know).

Get the slip right
Slip is essential especially at the ends of twists or braids. You can use whatever is your favourite product that will allow your hair to feel slippery and let strands glide past each other. I like to use a mixture of oil, leave in conditioner mixed in an old, spray bottle with water.

Give your self-time time and more time
Give your self adequate time so that you are not temped to rush and undo all you good work. It’s not unlikely for me to take a Friday or a Monday off from work so I have a long weekend to make sure doing my hair doesn’t interfere with my usual weekend errands and chores.

nuNAAT Summer Hairstyling Challenge - Product Review

I recently decided to give my hair a break from protective styling? Which mean it was time to put some effort in to my fro instead of my normal get up and go but I was ready.

Then like a magic Genie the guys from nuNAAT asked me to sample new Brazilian Pataua Oil collection and put them to the test in a perm rod set.
Umm yes!
The new NuNAAT brand is formulated with a blend of blends Patauá Oil and Pracaxi Oil which is found in the Brazilian rain forest and is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9.
This blend of moisturizing ingredients will leave your hair nourished and protected from dryness and breakage resulting in healthier hair.
Here are the products I tried:

Brazilian Patauá Oil Revitalizing Shampoo
This shampoo is sulphate-free and said to remove build up while adding moisture and neutralizing hair.

Brazilian Patauá Oil Moisturizing Conditioner
Detangles and adds moisture while using Brazilian oils and silicone to create a layer of protection on your hair, leaving it fortified and full of volume and shine.

Brazilian Patauá Oil Shine Enhancing Thermal Protect Lotion
Protects hair from heat styling damage and is blended with wheat protein complex to help prevent breakage and shedding.  Can be used on wet or dry hair.

Brazilian Patauá Oil Wrap Setting Mousse
This staple for protective styling is said to reduce frizz and perfect for create defined styles such as  flat twists, roller sets, flexi rod sets, etc. Use in conjunction with a warm dryer to set hair.

There is also a no-lye relaxer with this collection but I didn’t have any used for that.

The kit was simple enough to use but I have to admit that it took a few tries to get the desired effect, mainly because I thought that due to the warm weather we were having I could skip going under the dryer and just sleep in my curling rods.

By the third try I had to admit the blunder to myself, simply sleeping in the curling rods was not enough for my hair to dry properly.
DOH!
I wasn’t totally devastated with the initial results my curls were not as defined as I would have liked and my curls turned to frizz as soon as i went outside

that evening after out my hair in curlers I whipped out my hooded dryer determined to make my curls pop!

And volia!
Now I’m feeling myself

I would defiantly recommend this product and look forward to using it again

NATURIGIN Permanent Hair Dye Review

I have been on my natural hair journey for a few years now however my neutral hair colour is an off black brown colour that can only be described with one word blah!
I used to religiously dye my hair jet black but that along with having a relaxer, daily heat styling and the medication it take for Lupus my hair was in awful condition and now that I am rocking a healthy head of hair I am reluctant to use any chemicals.

A few months ago attended Bloggers Fashion week hosted by Bloggers Hangout where I was introduced to the guys from NATURIGIN and introduced to the NATURIGIN Permanent Hair Dye

The NATURIGIN hair dyes are non-permanent doesn’t contain PPD(P-phenylenediamine), Ammonia, Resorcinol or Peroxide so I thought why not give it a try.
I opted for Black 2.0

The Process was simple enough, the kit contained the following:
Colour Cream (A)
Activator (B)
After Colour Treatment (C)
Safety Gloves (D)

I simply added the contents of the Colour Cream (A) into the Activator squeezy bottle (B) shock the bottle to mix it up.

I then applied all the mixture from the Activator bottle to my hair starting on the hair roots and working towards the ends.

When my hair was coated in the mixture I then massaged it into my hair and the scalp, before covering it with a shower cap to let it work in

The instructions said to leave in for 30 mins but I gave it an extra 10 minutes as my hair doesn’t take dye very well.

After this I washed the dye out of my hair I applied the content of the After Colour Treatment (C) to my hair and massaged gently for 2 minutes and then rinsed it out.

I then followed with my fave conditioner.

Before

After

The result was a very natural dark colour, I wouldn’t necessarily describe to as jet black bit I was totally happy with the results

Have you tried any NATURIGIN products before?

Wots Her Name Again Hair Journey

Hi my name is Lee-Anne
I was addicted to the creamy crack and I probably still am.
Despite not indulging for over three years the choice to go completely natural was not totally my own.
Yes, I had considered it and had even started stretching out my relaxers and was slowly going on my
own kind of hair journey, which included protective styling and generally taking better care of my
hair by taking more notice of the products I was using.
However, the choice was ultimately made by
me living with an autoimmune diseases called Lupus, and had been put on steroids to combat it.
Suddenly my hair was coming out in clumps and I was advised to avoid relaxers until my condition
was stable.
I can’t remember quite when my relationship with relaxers stared but I think that it started before I
was 8, as I can remember dreading Sundays, as that is when my hair would have to be washed and
braided.  I hated having my hair done!
A combination of lack of understanding of how to maintain my hair coupled with a distinct lack of
time and patience my from my single black mother culminated in my ‘hair day’ being akin to being
tortured.
Tears were shed, combs were hidden in VCR and licks were given.
I also remember being told that my hair was picky, tough (I think I told a few people that too) and
coarse not long shiny and silky like my dolls or the white women on the TV, but that’s what I wanted.
One day after a particularly stressful session of getting my hair done (For both my mother and
myself) a broken wide tooth come was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
You’re getting a relaxer she angrily shouted at me!
Thinking this was some kind of punishment I simply cried.  The following week she came home with
a box of PCJ relaxer for girls. The American models looked so trendy to me with their silky hair in
fashionable styles and better still they were black like me!
“Is my hair going to look like that Mum” I asked hopefully to which she replied “yes”.
I don’t think anyone forgets their first perm I defiantly didn’t.
Oh I was feeling myself it was shiny soft and the comb ran right through it yes! I was feeling myself.
From then it was a blur of hairstyles throughout my adolescence and adulthood; braids, weaves
bobs you name it I did it.
How did you grow your hair so long? My white colleagues would often ask in amazement when I
sashayed into the office with hair down to my back.
Shrinkage, shedding, breakage, dry scalp and chemicals burns I experienced it.
Saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools I avoided it
All to have what I considered being beautiful hair.
Here I am three years deep and I am still learning about how to properly maintain and appreciate
and love my African hair.
Deep conditions, co-wash, moisturise and seal and of course protective styles, oh yes I am learning.
The more that I am learning is the more that I am becoming comfortable with my hair in its natural
state.
The question is would I relax my hair again in the future?
The politics of hair has been well discussed: perm verses natural making a symbolic play on your
cultural awareness.
I refuse to belong to any particular camp but am fully aware that knowledge of
self is a delicious power and choice and fashion is not a thing that can be politically determined or
confined.

Motions Hair Pre-wash Detangling Butter and Giveaway

During my visit to The Natural Hair Week a few weeks ago I happened upon the Motions stand a while having a natter with the staff.
I have been aware of motions for some time but I had never really tried any of their products, however the company has re-branded and launched a Natural textural textures range, which contains a heat styling range and a Natural textures range.
During our convo I mentioned to one of the consultants that I would be taking down my box braids, washing and deep conditioning my hair and how I was not looking forward to it. One of the consultants then introduced me to this little gem:
Pre-wash Detangling Butter

which is one of the newest products in the Motions Natural Textures range.
I was instructed to  me to gently finger comb my hair then apply the product to the hair wait 15 minutes then comb out.
I think I can handle that.
As Motions were selling four products for £10 I decided to treat my hair to the following:

Instead of going straight home after the event to rake out my braids and properly sort out my hair I ended up going out for dinner and drinks and rolled into my house around 10pm leaving me little time for me to take out my braids, wash and deep condition my hair as I had an appointment with a hairdresser to get my hair Crochet braided at 12pm the following day.
Once I took out the braids it was dumb late so unfortunately I wasn’t in a place to vogue and take pictures :(

As instructed I finger detangled my hair then I added the Pre-wash Detangling Butter massaging it into my hair then I left it for 15 mins then combed in sections with a wide tooth comb starting from the ends and working my up to the roots.
The product was creamy and had a lovely smell to it and I found it worked really well to detangle my tresses.

All I can say is wow! Combing out my hair after taking out my braids has never been this simple.
I then rinsed my hair and washed it with the Moisturizing Cleanser. It lathered up well and also smelled nice.
As I had my hair in the braided for around 4 weeks previously I was eager to give it a good deep condition.
I found the masque to be quite thin in consistency and I was concerned that I would end up using the whole tub on my hair but I found that a little went quite a long way.
When I applied the masque to my damp hair in sections before combing with a wide tooth comb and platting into a loose braid.
I then covered my hair with a shower cap I then had a hot bath to compensate for not sitting under the dryer.
After getting out of the bath, and putting on my PJ I decided to leave the conditioner in a little bit longer and ended up falling asleep with it in my hair. Not great for my pillows but not the worst thing that could happen.
The following morning when I rinsed out the conditioner my hair felt lovely an my hair soft (moisturised) oh and let me mention that when I applied the masque my curls suddenly popped into cutest tiny ringlets I wish a took a picture.
 Before
After

Again apologies for the lack of photos it was dumb o’clock in the morning.
While my hair was still slightly damp I moisturize and sealed with Creamy Hair Lotion by Cantu and Coconut oil and braid in sections and braided into chunky braids.

Have you tried Motions new range?
What are your thoughts?
Want to try out the  Pre-wash Detangling Butter?

Well I have on up for grabs!!
All you have to do is leave a comment below with your wash day tips and I will pick a winner on 25/06/2015
Easy right?
Good Luck

Cantu Hair Products Give Away

I was under the impression that this is Catu was a new natural hair brand however after further research I found that it has been around for a few years and in is getting good reviews in the natural hair community.

My initial encounter with the brand was at The Natural Hair Week I was first very impressed by the product knowledge and the enthusiasm of the staff on the stand, one of which sold me on the Cantu Deep Treatment Mask which unfortunately was sold out L Luckily Cantu would have a stand at Afro Hair and Beauty so I would be able to purchase some there.

In the meantime I was given a load of samples of the Creamy Hair Lotion which I used to moisturize my hair and sealed with coconut oil. The following day after taking out my braids and washing my hair.

My first thoughts what that the product smelt lovely and was moisturizing without feeling heavy.

I am currently rocking Crochet braids so I can’t  really speak on how the product worked for me long term however my hair dresser did ask me what I had used on my hair and commented that it let my hair feeling very soft.

When Attending Afro Hair & Beauty I was finally able to purchase the Cantu Deep Treatment Mask.

As I was so impressed with the brand I asked the staff to recommend a hair care system that I could give away in a prize draw for my readers. So here we go.
